Er wordt onderscheid gemaakt tussen andro\u00efde obesitas en gyno\u00efde obesitas.\n\nDe eerste komt vaak voor bij mannen en wordt gekenmerkt door een ophoping van vet in het bovenste deel van het lichaam (abdominale obesitas).\n\nGyno\u00efde obesitas is vrouwelijker, omdat het overgewicht in de billen en heupen zit (d.w.z. zadeltassen, love handles, etc.).\n\nMaar bij mannen en vrouwen kan obesitas matig, ernstig of morbide zijn.\n\nObesitas wordt matig genoemd als het resultaat van de gewicht\/lengte (m\u00b2) berekening tussen de 30-35 ligt; het wordt ernstig genoemd als dit resultaat boven de 35 ligt zonder de drempel van 40 te overschrijden.
